The first step to protect whales came in 1911 when the British Museum asked for research to be carried out into the hunting of Antarctic whales, humpbacks in particular. When the researchers discovered to what extent whale numbers had decreased, they demanded that some species be protected from whaling. Regulations governing whaling and the numbers which could be hunted annually were produced by the [G 20 / League of Nations], but these were not adhered to.
